| Description | The Fort Worth Democrat, March 11, 1877 reports that last night, at a meeting of base ball players at the courthouse, the Fort Worth BBC was named. A. L. Hurd, a rr ticket agent, was elected president. The played a game near the railroad depot. This team was also nicknamed the "Panthers," the nickname of Fort Worth. See Knight, "Fort Worth," p. 83. Sane April 29, 1877 reports that Fort Worth beat Dallas 17-12, in a 8 a side game. The long article gives a box score. Same May 5, 1877 reports that on May 2 they beat Weatherford 7-6 at Weatherford. The 2nd baseman of this team was Charlie Swasey. of the old Rockford Forest City club, who moved to Fort Worth in 1873. Fort Worth was incorporated in 1873. It had a population of 6,663 in 1880. Cincinnati-born Dewitt Clinton Pendery (1848-1924) was associated with this team. A Fort Worth alderman and merchant, he is best known as the inventor of chile powder. |
