Description | The Rock Island Argus, July 11, 1866 describes the Wapello grounds as immediately west of the Bailey Davenport house. Davenport was the mayor of Rock Island and its biggest landowner. His residence was on 17th St. and the pasture adjoining became Long View Park. This is the probably location of the grounds. The Davenport historic house in Rock Island is that of his father, Colonel George Davenport, and is located on Arsenal Island. The 1867 baseball tournament was held at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds, about a mile from downtown, near the farm of Jonah Case. |
