Description | The Oak Park Vindicator, June 2, 1899: "The Harlem Maroons and the Elmhurst Club played a game of ball at the Lathrop Grounds on Tuesday afternoon." Harlem won 9-8, with a clutch double in the last inning driving in the winning runs. Same July 21, 1899 has Elmhurst beating the Harlem Giants 9-1. Elmhurst was founded around 1871. A heavily German community, it seems to have adopted baseball relatively late. This is the first instance I've found of an organized team, though undoubtedly baseball was played informally prior to 1899. |
