"Magnificent Whistle Stop" (a history of Mendota), p 244: An August 26, 1869 newspaper account says two base ball clubs were formed recently of under 15s--the Red Breeches (Louis Bunker, captain) and the "Capt. Hodge Club" (Harvey Hodge, captain). Says many of their games were played in a field adjoining the railroad tracks.
