Description

Dodge City Times, July 20, 1878, says that on the Fourth of July the town celebrated with a "picnic; dancing on the ground; base ball;..."

The game probably made it to Dodge City earlier. There is a story that future Hall of Famer Charles Comiskey attended St. Mary's College here circa 1875, and played baseball with future manager Ted Sullivan.

Famed Western lawman, and future sportswriter, Bat Masterson is said to have helped organize the first baseball team in Dodge City.
