Description | "The beginnings: Champaign in the 1850s and 1860s" (1960) p. 35: "The Prairie Club of Champaign was organized in April 1867, with P. Van Horn, president; H. G. Gary, vice-president; George S. Scroggs, secretary; and W. S. Maxwell, treasurer." Scroggs was probably George Scroggs (1842-80), later editor of the Champaign Gazette, State Representative, Lt. 125th IL Infantry. Champaign was incorporated in 1860. It had 1727 residents that year, 4625 in 1870. |
