Description | The Columbia Phoenix July 23, 1867 has an ad in which the Phil Sheridan Base Ball Club, composed of army garrison troops, challenges the “gentlemen of Columbia” to a friendly game of baseball. Same August 11 and August 16, 1867 announces meetings of the Chicora and Columbia Base Ball Clubs, perhaps formed in response to this challenge. Columbia SC (1860 pop. 8000; 1870 pop. 9300) is about 110 miles inland from Charleston. |
