Description | The Chicago Tribune, May 31, 1868, has an article on the new grounds of the Excelsior club, on State St. near 23rd, a fenced in area 475 x 700 "perfectly smooth and level" with an amphitheater for the fans and facilities for the players. According to Morris, "Base Ball Pioneers" p. 215, the Enterprise and Eureka BBCs co-leased this property. The Chicago Tribune, March 13, 1868 says the Excelsiors will lease the grounds of the National Skating Club for their grounds this season. The Chicago Evening Post, Jan. 16, 1868 reports the Excelsiors playing a game of baseball at the National Skating Park. The NSP was located on this site prior to 1868. There's a long wikipedia article on this site. See also Tribune, Aug. 7, 1868. |
