On Monday last the “Uniques” of Butler and the “Stars” of Appleton City, played a match game of Base Ball at the latter place, which resulted as follows: Stars – 40; Uniques 34. Both clubs played well, and when we consider the little practice had by the “Uniques,” we are surprised at their not being beaten worse than they were, as the “Stars are an excellent lot of fellows, who are not dead on their feet, and they have played three match games, in two of which they have come off victorious. The game passed off quite pleasantly, there being no quarrelling or wrangling of consequence. The ladies and gentlemen of Appleton City, were out in force to witness the game, and we doubt not, were well pleased with the result.

We understand that these clubs will play another game in Butler, sometime during the present month, as the “Uniques” claim that they did not do their best at Appleton. We are glad that our Butler boys are plucky enough not to give up at the first defeat, and hope they will be more successful in the future.

-The Bates County Record (Butler, Mo.), August 2, 1873
