Description | The Sangamo Journal, March 25, 1858: "Wicket club--The young men of our city have organized a club for playing this favorite game of ball." Same, March 30, 1858, has a poem titled "The Springfield Wicket Club" which urges the players to "Weild [ic] club, weild the ball.." Same, June 14, 1834, reprints a Springfield City ordinance, Section 40, banning the Sunday playing of "bandy, cricket, cat, town ball, corner ball, over ball, fives or any other game of ball..." under pain of a $1 fine. |
