Description | Vigilant vs. Exercise - A match between these two clubs was played yesterday, on the grounds of yet he Vigilants, Third avenue, which resulted in favor of the Exercise. The playing of both clubs was very good, especially the batting, considering the strong wind they had to bat against. Up to the close of the the third innings the game was considered a close one, and had not Messerole, the catcher of the Vigilants, met with an accident by a foul ball striking him in the face, and also the first baseman playing rather careless, letting a ball pass him which might easily have stopped, the Exercise boys would have had theirs hands full to beat them. These mishaps put a damper on the Vigilants, and they played very careless the remainder of the game. Of the Excerise, Hough, catcher and Sprague, pitcher, showed very fine play, the former catching balls that seemed almost impossible for him to reach. Cheney and Elmandorf also played well, both of them showing a clean score. The Playing of VanPelt, shortstop, Young, Secondbase, and Bogart and Messerole, pitcher and catcher, of the Vigilants was very creditable. The decisions of the umpire, P. O'Brien were very prompt and satisfactory. The following is the score: Vigilants - 14 Excerise - 29 |
