Description | The Thomasville Times, Aug. 8, 22, 1874 reports that the Wide Awakes of Valdosta defeated the Socials of Quitman 19-6 in a 3 inning game. The Valdostans had to leave in the middle of the 4th inning to catch a train. The Pearson Tribune Sept. 26, 1919 has a long article on this team winning a tournament in 1875, and gives brief bios of the players. Their star was pitcher J. W. McNamara, a Boston-born painter and later minister. There was also a Light Foot Club of Valdosta, perhaps a junior club. See Gallaher's Independent, Oct. 3, 1874. |
