Description | The Butte Miner, Oct. 9, 1877, reports on a "Base Ball Match" played last Sunday on the only flat ground in the town, "near the old cemetery." The local Athletics beat the Lone Star 23 to 7. Same, Oct. 30, 1877, announces under the heading "The Base Ball Party" that the Silver City Base Ball Club of Butte will be giving a ball next Friday. Same, Oct. 23, 1877 reports on a game between the Athletics and Lone Star, and mentions that the Athletics have challened the Northwesters of Deer Lodge. Helena Independent, Sept. 24, 1878: "Base Ball. On Wednesday of this week [i.e., 9-25] a match game of base ball will be played between the Silver City Club of Butte and the Three Cs of Helena at the Fair grounds." Butte (fd. 1864) had 241 residents in 1870 and 3,365 in 1880. |
