Description | See the Honolulu Star Bulletin, May 11, 1929 (below) for an account of this game, billed as "the first baseball game played in Hawaii." It was played July 4, 1866 at the Punahou school grounds, and won by the "natives," captained and led by a "foreigner," Charles T. Gulick (see Pioneer and Pacific Club entries for more on him). See the other 7-4-66 entry for a slightly different take on this game. In this context, "native" means Hawaiian of Polynesian descent, while "foreigner" ("Haole") means Hawaiian of European descent. See also the entries on the Pioneer and Pacific BBCs, which were derived from the players on these teams. |
