Description | The Boston Post, March 22, 1834 reports that a young man of Wilkes Barre, George Gobel, "while playing ball... received a several blow from a ball-club" and died 24 hours later. Note enough detail to say for sure what kind of ball game this was. Bat referred to as a "ball club"; other sources from that time refer to it as a bat. Also, being killed by a bat was, it seems, not a rarity at that time. |
