Description

Nauright and Parish, "Sports Around the World," p. 64: "Baseball was brought to Aruba and Curacao, which sit just off the coast of Venezuela, in the 1930s ... [by] Venezuelan political refugees and oil refinery workers.."

Aruba and Curacao were Dutch colonies at the time. Today they are "constituent countries" in "the Kingdom of the Netherlands."

Chetwynd, "Baseball in Europe" p. 26 notes that Aruba joined the International Baseball Association in 1950. The Aruban newspaper Observador, Jan. 17, 1962 notes the "Amateur Baseball Bond Aruba".

Comment

The Aruba Esso news has lots of reports of baseball games being played by the American oil workers, with teams named Artraco and SanLucas. Cf. April 11, 1947 issue.
