Description | The Darwin Northern Standard, Oct. 18, 1938: "Baseball. The first meeting of the proposed Northern Territory Baseball Association was held at the Victoria Hotel on Tuesday evening, 11th inst." A Mr. G. Petschler was announced as association secretary. Same, Nov. 18, 1938, under the headline "Baseball" reports on the 2nd meeting, and mentions the "Garrison" club. It appears that the impetus for the game in remote Darwin came from south Australia soldiers stationed there for training in that year. Same, March 1, 1940, reports that the Town and Garrison teams were to play on the town oval Sunday morning. Clark, "A History of Australian Baseball," p. 78, says "organized baseball in the Northern Territory started in 1953." Clark's book did not mention the 1938 association, or games played by teams prior to 1953. |
