Description | The Mesilla Valley Democrat, April 19, 1887: "Lincoln has a base ball club." The White Oaks Lincoln County Leader, Aug. 27, 1887 mentions the George Barber BBC of Lincoln, which is to play the White Oaks BBC. A Lincoln BBC played White Oaks on July 4th. Same, June 25, July 9, 1887. Same, April 16, 1887 reports that the George Barber BBC was recently formed, with Ben H. Ellis as president, and George Curry (future governor of NM) as captain. There is a photo of this club. Lincoln was founded in 1869. It is famous for being the epicenter of the Lincoln County war, and the exploits of local gunman Billy the Kid. It is likely that baseball came here earlier, though from the tone of the article this might be the first organized team in that town. |
