Description | Promoter Henry Flagler built the Royal Poinciana Hotel in 1894 in what is now Palm Beach (the town was incorporated in 1911). To entertain hotel guests at this hotel and the Breakers Hotel (built 1896), he hired to work at the hotels black semi-pro baseball players. The Palm Beach Daily News, Jan. 27, 1898 (cited in McNeil, "Black Baseball," p. 6) reports that baseball games are played on the hotel grounds "three times a week," and two weeks later reports the score of one such game between the hotel teams. This hotel team evolved and later featured some Negro League Stars. The two hotels burned in a 1925 fire. |
