Text | After examining nearly 200 regiments, the Sanitary Commission was reported to have found that “in forty-two regiments, systematic athletic recreations (foot ball, base ball, &c) were general. In one hundred and fifty-six, there were none. Where there were none, card playing and other indoor games took their place. This invited gambling abuses, it was inferred. “War Miscellanies. Interesting Army Statistics,” Springfield [MA] Republican, January 25, 1862. Accessed via Genealogybank, 5/21/09. None: is it worth inspecting the report itself in search of further detail? It is not available online in May 2009. |
