Text

Fordham College reportedly played a game against Xavier College in 1859, using the new Association rules.

Sources

Per Dean A. Sullivan, Compiler and Editor, Early Innings: A Documentary History of Baseball, 1825-1908 [University of Nebraska Press, 1995], p. 32. Sullivan dates the game November 3, 1859, but does not give a source.

Warning

Craig Waff [email of May 21, 2009] reported that he has not been able to confirm this game, and that press material from Fordham does not document the game.

SABR's Baseball Index [TBI] cites a Fordham game in the June 16 1860 Clipper. The 1860 account does not mention an 1859 game.

Comment

The Xavier College in this story is presumably College of St. Francis Xavier, a Mahattan institution that closed in 1913.

The 1860 teams apparently were not regarded as representing their schools, but were base ball clubs formed from among students, and called the Rose Hill BBC (Fordham) and the Social BBC (St. Xavier's College)
