Description

Port Lyautey (now, Kenitra) was a French naval base taken over by the Americans in 1942. In 1943, entertainer Al Schacht performed there during a game among base personnel. On July 29, 1945, ex-Cards pitcher Hersh Lyons pitched his Port Lyautey Air Force team to a 5-4 victory over the Port Lyautey Navy Seahawks, for the serviceman's championship of North Africa. See www.baseballinwartime.com . Schacht went on to do his thing in Casablanca, Morocco, and Bizerte, Tunisia.

www.portlyautey.com has a photo of the "1st lighted baseball diamond in North Africa, 1955. Located at NAF Port Lyautey."
