Description

"The first baseball game in Venezuela was played on May 23, 1895. We know the exact date of the game because one of the participants commissioned a photographer to capture an image of the players. A photo of El Caracas Base Ball Club appeared in the August 15, 1895, edition of a local publication, El Cojo Ilustrado. A note on the origins of baseball in the United States and an explanation of how it was played accompanied the photo."

Milton Jamail, Venezuelan Bust, Baseball Boom (2008), page 16. Accessed in snippet view, February 2010.

Peter Bjarkman estimates that Venezuelan "first experiments with baseball" go "back well before the turn of the century." Peter C. Bjarkman, Diamonds Around the Globe (Greenwood Press, 2005), page 204.

Comment

Rivera, An Illustrated Guide to Caracas (1897) writes that baseball was eing played there, on the grounds near the Cricket grounds and near the Petare Railroad station.
