Description | Weekly Oskaloosa Herald, Sept. 8, 1870 has a long report on the state baseball tournament held at Des Moines Aug. 31-Sept. 2. The correspondent noted that the ball grounds had been hastily laid out at the fair grounds, and were "very inferior," not even having a home plate. An 1875 map locates the fair grounds as south of the Horse Shoe Lake, between the lake and the Raccoon River, west of the old Sec Taylor ballpark (now, Principal Park) grounds. The Sec Taylor grounds were a public park at this time. Query whether earlier games were played at either location. |
