Description | "The Twenty-Fifth Infantry Regiment Takes the Field," National Pastime 15 (1995) pp. 59-64 relates that on Xmas day, 1899, at the camp of the 12th Infantry in the Philippines, the 25th played the 12th a match game of baseball. There was a Manila Baseball League 1899-1902 among the US soldiers and sailors. The Kansas City Star, Aug. 31, 1903: "Base Ball in the Philippines. Captain Pershing, now at home on leave of absence after four years service in the Philippines, says that the Filipino boys are beginning to play base ball with zest and enthusiasm. In all the big towns there is a ball nine composed wholly of native players." John J. Pershing was later CIC of the American army in Europe during World War I.
