Description

The Miami Metropolis, Sept. 11, 1896 reports a game between the plumbers and steamfitters teams, employees of the new Royal Palm Hotel. The Steamfitters won 19-18. Same Oct. 2, 1896 says the ballgrounds extended as far as 12th St.

Same, Sept. 25, 1896, reports on "The Baseball Game.... The Steamfitters and Plumbers met again on the diamond..." with the former winning 31-27. The game was called after 7 innings on account of darkness. Evidently the ump's decisions were often questioned, not because he was partial, but because the playing field was overgrown and had no distinct foul lines he could judge by.

Same Oct. 2, 1896 reports that the Painters beat the Plumbers 18-17. For this game, the field was cleared of brush.

Looking at old and modern maps, it's probable that the game was played just north of the hotel, in a lot that later became "Palm Park" and is about where the modern Bayfront Park is. 12th St. has been renamed.
