Description | The Base Ball Match at Hastings: The copy of the score of this game prepared for the papers, got lost in transit. We find in the Hastings Conserver, a full report of the game, which we give below: Base Ball...Agreeably to the terms of their challenge, North Star Club, of St. Paul, came down on Saturday to play a match game with Vermillion Club of Hastings. Contrary to expectation the day proved very pleasant, although the rains of the previous afternoon and evening left the ground in none of the best conditions. The following is the score made by both sides: North Star outs runs Olin, p 1 8 Wilson, c 2 8 Spencer, lb 2 6 Daily, ss 3 5 Bromley, cf 4 6 Webb, rf 3 6 Lark, lf 3 5 Lanpher, 3b 4 6 Tostevin, 2b 5 5 (total ) (27) (55) Vermillion Finch, ss 4 1 Stone, c 3 3 Marshall, 3b 5 0 DeKay, rf 3 3 Gardner, lf 4 2 Greiner, lb 1 5 Norton, p 2 2 Barnum, 2b 2 3 Kinsey, cf 3 2 (total) (27) (21) North Star 4 4 8 7 6 1 18 6 1 = 55 Vermillion 2 2 0 0 7 2 0 0 8 = 21 Umpire: W.C. Cowles of Vermillion Club Scorer: Mssrs. Swartz and Potts The play was good, and witnessed by a crowd of persons. It is due Vermillion Club to state that they only organized after the challenge was received, and the day preceding the match, and that their nine had never played together before. Want of practice was clearly discernible from the outset. Still, under the circumstances they played well and in batting, at least, proved fully equal to their opponents. In the evening both clubs and visitors from St. Paul assembled at the Herndon House for supper prepared by the Vermillion Club in honor of her guests. The best of feeling prevailed, and ample justice was done the viands of mine host. Not till the last bell was sounded did we reluctantly say goodbye to the gentlemanly members of the North Star Club, who by the way are a set of as good fellows as ever swung a bat. We believe that this friendly meeting will long be remembered by victor and vanquished, and will mark an important era in the history of the game in the State. We are pleased to learn that it is the intention of Vermillion Club to return the visit of the North Star boys some time this fall and play a challenge game here. May we be there to see. Hastings MN is about 20 miles SE of St. Paul and 30 miles SE of Minneapolis. |
