Description | An Allied Expeditionary Force was sent to Vladivostok, Russia at the end of World War I. And the soldiers played baseball while stationed there. Isitt, "From Victoria to Vladivostok: Canada's Siberian Expedition, 1917-19" p. 110 has a photo of a baseball team organized by Canadian soldiers in Vladivostok in 1919. See also p. 119 for a mention of baseball (and theatricals organized by Lt. (and future movie star) Raymond Massey). American solders there played baseball too. See Saul, "War and Revolution: The United States and Russia 1914-1921." The game might have been played there 1-2 years earlier than 1919, but 1919 is the first verified year. |
