Description | The Cheyenne (Wyo.) Daily Leader, June 27, 1870, notes that the Silver Star Club of Nevada lost to the Eagle Club of California in a match "for the championship of the Pacific Coast." The San Francisco Chronicle, June 26, 1870, has a long article on this game, won by the Eagles 34-16. The San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin, June 16, 1870, makes it clear that this is the Carson City Silver Stars, on a tour in CA playing CA teams, including the Eagles of SF. The Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, Sept. 2, 1874: "Base Ball--A match game of base-ball was played at Carson on Sunday afternoon [Aug. 30] between the Silver Stars of that City and the O'Shaughnesseys of Virginia..." Carson City NV (1870 pop. about 3,000; 1880 pop. about 4,200)is about 360 miles NW of Las Vegas and about 125 NE of Sacramento CA. Virginia City NV (1870 pop. about 7,000; 1880 pop. about 11,000) is about 10 miiles NE of Carson City. Its current pop is about 850. |
