Description | The Wilmington Journal, Sept. 27, 1866, cites the Raleigh Press in reporting: "a new base ball club was organized last night, with Major Seaton Gales as president, Rev. Willie Lacy for the treasurership; and Charles Busbee, Secretary." Same Oct. 18, 1866 notes that there are several ball clubs in Raleigh. The Raleigh Tri Weekly Standard, Nov. 6, 1866, gives the box score of a match game between the Pioneer and Tar Heel clubs, with the Pioneer winning 39-33. Charles M. Busbee, above, is one of the Tar Heel players.

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know
Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
