Description

One of the earliest recorded instances of wintering whalers playing baseball comes from the logbook of Richard Holley Fisher, the then 44-year-old first mate of the Daniel Webster. The Daniel Webster left New Bedford, Massachusetts, on March 21, 1860, and set a course north for the Davis Strait. By early November, the Daniel Webster had entered winter quarters in Cumberland Sound until the spring thaw allowed them to resume their hunt. Other ships did the same. The sole account in Fisher’s log of the crew playing baseball is found on Christmas Day. On December 25, 1860, with the temperature sitting at 12°F (or about -11°C), Fisher wrote in his log, “All this 24 hours light variable winds and fine clear weather. The men having a good time. Playing ball and fireing [sic] the big gun, and having a good dinner. All the captains and crew from the other ships on board.”
