Description

According to the anonymous log keeper of the Black Eagle out of New Bedford, Massachusetts, the ship’s crew played baseball on back-to-back days—November 22 and 23, 1862—while wintering at Depot Island in Hudson Bay. The Black Eagle had been locked in the ice since September 1862 with 10 other whaling ships.

On November 23, some of the men went hunting and those who stayed behind once again turned to sport to pass the time. “The rest employed in playing ball,” notes the log book.
