Description | The Petersburg Index, April 4, 1867 says a baseball club has been organized at Goldsboro. This is undoubtedly the Vance Base Ball Club, whose organization is reported in the Raleigh Weekly Progress, April 11, 1867. J. W. Jones is announced as president of this club. Goldsboro NC (current pop. about 37,500) is about 50 miles SE of Raleigh NC. A match was played in Goldsboro April 5, 1865 between two team of Union army soldiers, both representing the 102nd NY Inf.
