Description | The Tallahassee Weekly Floridian, Feb. 28, 1871 reports that on the 17th the Seminole Club of Key West lost 80-26 to a nine from the USS Severn. The Washington, DC Critic Record, Jan. 16, 1872, reports: "The citizens of Key West enliven the present heated term by playing base ball." Key West was a US naval station. Northern-born sailors may have introduced the game there, and earlier than 1872. Elias, "The Empire Strikes Back" p. 1880 says The Tampa Journal, Nov. 29, 1888 has the Key West club challenging Tampa and Ybor City. |
