Nick Name Virginia Baseball Club
Earliest Known Date Sunday, May 19, 1895 -- no later than May 19
Location Virginia, MN, United States
Description

The paper cited below announced a result of a game the previous Sunday (May 19) between the Virginia and Eveleth Baseball Clubs; resulting in a score of 23-10. The wording was such that it is unclear which team won the game. The Virginia Enterprise and The Virginian (a weekly) covered numerous local baseball games during the summer of 1895 between teams from Virginia, Eveleth, Tower, Iron Junction, and Duluth.

Note: Baseball may have been played earlier than 1895 on the eastern Mesabi Iron Range (first iron ore shipped from Mt. Iron in 1892) but the earliest existing newspapers that covered the area are the two Virginia newspapers named above from 1895.

Fire destroyed large parts of the city of Virginia in 1893 and 1900.

the two highest census counts for Virginia were in 1920 and 1960 (both slightly over 14,000)
