Description

The first newspaper mention of organized baseball in New Orleans is of a game played July 29, 1859, between two nines (teams) of the Louisiana Base Ball Club, Pescay's nine vs. Jones' nine. The sides started at 4 o’clock, and the nines could only complete four innings before darkness postponed the play, which was completed a few days later. See the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Aug. 3, 1859. See also the New York Clipper, Aug. 20, 1859. Both give a box score.
