Cesar Gonzalez Gomez, "March, Conquest, and Play Ball: The Game in the Mexican-American War, 1846-1848," Base Ball, Fall 2011, pp. 13-22, says that in November 1847 American troops occupied the port of Mazatlan and played baseball "in the marsh located at Montuosa hill..." The article cites three separate but non-primary sources.
