Description

The Friend, July 1, 1872 (a publication of the Hawaiian Protestant Missionaries) reports that in April 1871, the natives in the Gilbert Islands were backsliding: "Many of the people spent their time in flying kites, playing baseball, racing canoes and other amusements."

From the context, it appears they're referring to the mission on "Apaiang" (now spelled Abaiang) Island. Rev. Horace Bingham II had spent time here, and may have introduced the game he was familiar with from his time in Hawaii.
