Description | The Savannah Morning Republican, July 7, 1865 reports a "Base Ball Challenge" by "the picked nine of the 173rd New York [Infantry]" challenging any other club in Savannah. The 173rd was part of the Union army occupation force. This report suggests there were other teams in Savannah in 1865. The city may have had baseball earlier. See Protoball Chronology, 1862. |
