<p>There were RR connections east. But the traffic was more in riverboats west.<br />BTW I found no mention of this Oct. 1857 game in the 1857 Pittsburgh newspapers. That doesn't mean it wasn't played.</p>

<p>Bruce's general point was that in 1857, Pittsburgh was more regularly connected to Ohio Valley locations than those in the eastern USA.</p>
