Description

The Hawaiian Gazette, Aug. 18, 1875, mentions a game between two Honolulu teams: the Pacifics and the Whangdoodles.

One illustrious mainland recruit was William H. Chickering, who came to Hawaii in 1871 to teach the classics. He had played shortstop for Amherst College, and at Punahou he served as umpire and catcher for both teams, as well as joining the Whangdoodles, "a downtown club composed of Punahou boys, old and new [,which] [u]ntil 1875 ... kept up the record of never losing a game."
