| Description | The Carson Daily Appeal, July 2, 1869 announces the first meeting of the Silver Star BBC. Same Aug. 13, 1869 has the SSBBC challenging any nine of the state, signed Z. C. Eldridge, Secy. Same, Sept. 9, 1869 have the Silver Stars defeating the Virginia City club 54-18 yesterday. This game was at the Plaza (today, the state capitol). See Robert A. Nylen, “Frontier Baseball,” Nevada, vol. 50, no. 2 (March/April. 1990),27-29,55 The New York Clipper, March 19, 1870 gives the box score of an intersqaud game of the Silver Star Club at Carson City. Captains of the two nines were Harry Berthrong, a noted eastern amateur (Washington Nationals) who'd just been given a job in the government mint there, and Finney, of the Jefferson's of DC. The Cheyenne (Wyo.) Daily Leader, June 27, 1870, notes that the Silver Star Club of Nevada lost to the Eagle Club of California in a match "for the championship of the Pacific Coast." The San Francisco Chronicle, June 26, 1870, has a long article on this game, won by the Eagles 34-16. The San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin, June 16, 1870, makes it clear that this is the Carson City Silver Stars, on a tour in CA playing CA teams, including the Eagles of SF. The Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, Sept. 2, 1874: "Base Ball--A match game of base-ball was played at Carson on Sunday afternoon [Aug. 30] between the Silver Stars of that City and the O'Shaughnesseys of Virginia..." Carson City NV (1870 pop. about 3,000; 1880 pop. about 4,200) is about 360 miles NW of Las Vegas and about 125 NE of Sacramento CA. "Silver Star" was/is the name of a mining district in/near Carson City. |
