Description

The Army and Navy Journal, May 31, 1884, prints a letter from a correspondent of the Baltimore Sun, dated April 21, Smyrna (modern Izmir), which excerpt starts: "The crew gave several exhibitions on shore of the American game of base ball. On March 11, the [USS] Lancaster got under way for Alexandria, Egypt..."

The Sun printed several letters during this time from this correspondent, but not this one. The Lancaster had baseball clubs, noted in other letters.
