Text | [reporting Thomas Fitzgerald on an extended visit to Europe] The Colonel has just visited the ducal house, whose family name he bears, and his father, Gerald Fitzgerald, stood bravely by the side of the unfortunate Lord Edward Fitzgerald in 1798. The elder Fitzgerald escaped the fate of his associates, and fled to the United States. He settled in the city of New York, where his eldest son was born, when the century was very young indeed. |
