Text

(Union Club of Morrisania v Baltic Club of New York on 31 July 1856) The referee, Mr. Davis, had no easy berth; his judgment was very frequently asked for by the umpires.  However, from the position of the referee, it is impossible that he should always judge perfectly correct, and these errors, though always annoying to the party who suffers, should be overlooked without a murmur.
