"150 years ago in baseball: Spring Training. The Chicago White Stockings arrive today in New Orleans. The season began much later than it does nowadays. Spring Training today is entering the home stretch, while just starting in 1871. It also was far less consistent. Few clubs made trips to the South at this point. It will be decades before that is universal. These things were pretty much done on the fly, with the financial prospects weighing heavily in the decision whether to make a trip or just train at home."

"150 years ago in baseball: a follow-up discussion of yesterday's meeting creating the NAPBBP. Two questions were how to choose the umpire for a game, and how to resolve disputes over players who "revolved," signing multiple contracts. Neither of these answers will prove satisfactory.

. . . .

The solution presented here for revolvers . . . attempts a local solution when a central solution really is necessary. The idea is that the two clubs claiming the player will agree on a neutral third party: essentially binding arbitration. But limiting the arbitrators to club presidents made for a small pool to choose from. Getting someone who is both willing to take on what is bound to be a thankless task and is acceptable to both sides didn't work out. The idea will soon be dropped, and the job taken over by a central Judiciary Committee appointed by the NAPBBP president. This will work passably well, until it doesn't. But that unhappy state won't be until 1875."
