"The first recorded baseball match, played at Sydney's Moore Park on July 9, 1878, was a pickup game, with both teams drawn up from members of the Surrey Cricket Club. For the occasion they called themselves the Surrey Base-Ball Club."

The Sydney Morning Herald, June 14 and 15, 1878, ran advertisements from the cricket club, asking players to join a new base ball club, to play on the new cricket grounds at Moor Park. [ba]
