Description

The Ottawa Free Trader, June 26, 1858, reports on a "trial of skill" played "Friday of last week" at Marseilles between the Marseilles Base Ball Club and the Base Ball and Wicket Club of Ottawa. It was a three-inning game, played in 3 hours 40 minutes, with Ottawa winning by "21 points" (230 to 209).

The Ottawa Republican, June 26, 1858, reported on this game too: "On June 13th, the Ottawa Ball Club, having received a challenge from the ball club of Marseilles for a match game of base ball, preceded to the village determined to settle the interesting, important and momentous occasion as to which team were the best on a knock, a catch and a run." They played on the green near the canal. J. H. Burlison is mentioned as vice president of the Ottawa club, and having made a pep talk nobody could hear.

This does not appear to be the NY game.

Two umpires are mentioned, [John] H. Burlison of Ottawa and A. B. Thompson of Marseilles. The Marseilles club prepared a post-game supper, but the "late hour" saw the Ottawa team going home without it.
