Text	This coming season the experiment will be tried of giving the umpire power to punish players who are guilty of any of the abuses connected with umpiring which prevailed in 1877. By way of penalty for the violation of any rule, disgrace will sometimes produce good results, but in other instances it fails. But touch a man’s pocket in this way and you have a sure means of controlling him. Hence the principle of inflicting fines on players who violate the new code of League rules applicable to umpires. The umpire of 1878 can protect himself, and if he finds a player disputing–except in cases where a palpable misinterpretation of the rules is concerned–the infliction of a fine of ten or twenty dollars, to be deducted from the offender’s salary, will be likely to have a magical effect in taming the noted chin-music performers.
