| Text | [from an interview of George Wright] I think the reserve rule is very good, but object to the privileges a club has of compelling a player to remain with it until he is released. I think two years is long enough to keep a player in reserve. It is hard to compel a player to remain with a club, or in a city, that may be disagreeable to him in more ways than one. A league manager would say that the effect would be to raise salaries. I am of the idea that I could engage many leading players of the country at much less salaries than they are now receiving, because they are dissatisfied. It is not the money altogether that they care for. The $1000 rule is abominable. For instance, a $2500 player an be reserved by a club for $1000, and if he is dissatisfied he has no redress whatever, and if he wishes to play at all, it must be with the club reserving him. He should have some right of appeal and vindication. |
